I hadn’t traveled on their train since 2003. The experience was just as great, especially since we were joined by our grandchildren who had never before ridden on a train. A strong thunderstorm popped up making the experience even more exciting.

Born in October 2009, she made it to almost 15. That’s a feat for a golden retriever. The average lifespan is 10-12 years. We credit our vet, Dr. Andrea Clifton, for the extra years. Our Australian shepherd puppy, Gerda, also kept Freyja young, and became her protector and advocate.

Freyja loved living in Idaho, where she was free of the foxtails that plagued her ears and paws in Livermore, California. Here she had soft green grass and the cool water of the Lemhi River. We think that added to her longevity, too. Freyja was loved by family and made many friends. We thank all for their kindness, especially Dr. Andy and Catherine Dingey of Western Dog Salon.

Freyja will be missed. Of course she will. She is in that “better place” romping with the heavenly dog pack of Kilo, Sonja, Olav, Loki, Cheyenna, Maki and Cassie and other dogs that have been special in our lives.

Today, it is being watched over by Mexico’s National Institute of Anthropology and History. Visiting the mission was one of the activities offered by Wild Loreto Tours through the resort at which we were staying. The guide offers history of the area as well as the mission as the van travels the winding road past ranches, abandoned structures, orchards, a chapel and scenic overlooks. Depending on recent rainfall, there could be a few water crossings. A few years ago, we visited the first mission in downtown Loreto.

There are plenty of places to read about the history of the Jesuits who founded the missions and how the local population fared. I’ll skip that here. My interest was in the history and architecture that have been preserved for so many centuries.

We expected this would become an annual family gathering.

Air shows are challenging to photograph, especially when trying to use a long lens while seated in the packed stands. These photos were made on Saturday, Sept. 16, the penultimate day of the races.

Two veteran California T-6 pilots, Chris Rushing of Thousand Oaks and Nick Macy of Tulelake were killed in a post-race collision on the final day, Sept. 17. Rushing won the T-6 Class Gold race with Macy finishing in second. They were en route to landing. May they rest in peace. Condolences to their families, crews, friends and the air racing community.

Friends for more than 50 years, Peggy and I have gone on several girls trips together — Santa Fe, Sedona, Portland — you know, the easy-to-get-to places. With significant birthdays this year, we gave in to better financial judgment and went to Iceland. We started planning in December 2022 and traveled in June, agonizing over waterproof clothing needs and other everyday life things that we have experienced as native Minnesotans and Scandinavian-Americans. Why worry?

We stayed in an older area of Reykjavik and took excursions every other day. The “off’ days were spent exploring the city. Each morning at the hotel’s delicious breakfast buffet, a snappy and jazzy cover of Katy Perry’s “I Kissed a Girl” was played as background music among tunes by Motown artists, Norah Jones and others. It was the motivation we needed to grab our favorite Chapstick (in my case O’Keeffe’s lip balm) and make our way on foot to Bus Stop 1 a few blocks away. A Your Day Tours small-group van would whisk us away to the Golden Circle, Snæfellsnes Peninsula or South Coast. Most days were dreary, chilly and windy, but we were ready to make the best of the weather. Drivers Völli, Anastasia and Ævar kept the small-group tours lively with Iceland’s history, folktales, jokes and language lessons interspersed with music by Icelandic artists.

Advice and tips: • Be ready for the weather — cold and windy outdoors; windy indoors. • People will be everywhere. They come from all over the world and some drive on the right, others on the left. They walk that way, too. Walk defensively. • Nobody cares what your footwear looks like. Function over fashion. That goes for hairstyle, too. • Drink the tap water. • Try the licorice. • Tips aren’t expected, but are nice for tour guides. That’s likely the only time you will need cash. • The Settlement Exhibition, conveniently next door to our hotel, is worth visiting, especially for fans of Vikings, archaeology and history. • The Perlan nature museum is where guests can experience the northern lights, earthquakes, life above and below the ocean’s surface, volcanos and other “Wonders of Iceland.” Bring a jacket and don’t miss the ice cave. Keep it handy for a spin around the observation deck. • Learn about Viking life, and definitely the opposite, at the Saga Museum. Being an early Icelander sure was tough. The self-guided audio tour past the dioramas could give the kiddos nightmares. It had musty odor, but just imagine what a Viking smelled like. • Don’t underestimate the time you’ll need at Keflavik International Airport. • Flybus is an easy way to and from KEF. • Iceland is expensive. Budget for a big credit card bill and have fun. • Just roll with it.

Photo above by unknown tourist who returned the favor after I photographed him.

Beaverslides were invented in nearby Beaverhead County, Montana. Rancher Dan French said that area becoming known as the “Land of 10,000 Haystacks.” I am from the ‘Land of 10,000 Lakes,” a number greatly underestimated. I can imagine that the haystacks were, too. I will miss this stalwart neighbor.

This is the kind of exercise I can get into. It involved challenging the eyes, mind and at times the not-so-happy-to-kneel knees. We headed out to the Sacajawea Center, which has trails, gardens, wildlife, and much more to see and do. If you’re in Salmon, Idaho, you can’t miss it and the visitor center is worth exploring. For those of us on this visual scavenger hunt, there was plenty to see in the waning hours of the day. Most elements are represented in the photo gallery. The club meets at 7 p.m. the fourth Wednesday of the month at the Purple Easel Gallery.

A few Axel videos are available on YouTube. Just fast-forward toward the end. But I digress. Birdies with yellow bills, or not, have caught my attention for many years. I appreciate the Audubon Society’s bird field guide and Merlin Bird ID app, which does the heavy lifting when it comes to identifying the winged creatures. The Merlin app can even identify a camera-shy bird by its song. In my newspaper days, I learned that misidentifying a bird leads to angry and snide phone calls, even when the ID came from a trustworthy expert. Sorry that the captions couldn’t have been more specific.

By Cindi Christie

This time of year, people watch their mailboxes or front porches with great anticipation of holiday gifts arriving. For me, December brings a real sense of dread.

The story begins innocently enough. The man who would become my husband was attending college in Minnesota, far from his favorite foods and a mother who wanted to be sure he wasn’t a starving student.

Thus, the care package. As regular as clockwork, a box would arrive with Ghirardelli Flicks candy, Rice-a-Roni, homemade treats and some canned goods — tuna, pineapple, peas and carrots, soups and always lots of of Ortega diced green chiles.

So there we were, friends Darryl and Nancy and me, watching him open yet another box and wondering what to make of the stack of 4-ounce cans. Being that the three of us were Minnesota natives, and our idea of adventurous dining was having freshly ground pepper land on our iceberg lettuce and grated carrot salads, we decided that the best thing we could make was fun.

Rick would be teased each time the mystery ingredient arrived. Did he actually eat these chiles? Did he sell them on the Black Market to subsidize his GI Bill income?

And here would come another box with more chiles. He would try to pawn them off, but had no takers. All we would do is tease. Constantly, relentlessly. The jokes took on a life of their own.

A few years passed and Rick and I got married and moved to California. We’re now Idaho residents. The next year, Darryl and Nancy were wed and stayed in Minnesota except for a few years in Pittsburgh.

We were delighted to get the news of the birth of their baby boy. We thought an appropriate gift was a stuffed animal — a little lamb that played a lullaby. Sewed into the lamb was a can of Ortega green chiles.

Their reply? Sending a box of Minnesota Twins Wheaties, with a canned special prize inside, after the team won the World Series in 1987.

The War of the Chiles was on.

Each year at Christmastime, a can of Ortega diced green chiles has traveled in disguise from our house to theirs, or their house to ours. Here are a few of the disguises, many of which take on a political theme or pay homage to a major news story of the year:

• A can is hidden beneath coins hot-glued into a tin cup. A sticker glued to the outside sports Obama’s face and the words: Change. (us to them)
• An ornament once Paris Hilton perfume now holds a can of chiles. (them to us)
• A nutcracker wearing a paper skirt hides the goods. (them to us)
• A can is embedded in a small concrete boat anchor to commemorate hours of waiting outside of the Scott Peterson trial. The anchor serves as a patio paperweight and keeps the Star Tribune from blowing all over their neighborhood. (us to them)
• A doll’s belly bulges to become Pregnant Chad following the 2000 presidential election. (us to them)
• Millennium baby (them to us)
• Wrapping removed from one of the cans in a gift pack of Smokehouse Almonds. Two cans stacked made it appear like a regular can of almonds. The label was reapplied to hide the tampering. The chiles were discovered when Nancy opened the almonds to serve at a holiday party. (us to them)
• A can is tucked into a large box of wadded up job applications as the country’s unemployment rate rose. (them to us)
• Feathers adorn one can along with a photo of King Louie (Hugh Griffith) of “Start the Revolution Without Me,” a favorite film of ours from which we still quote random lines — just like we did during college newspaper paste-up nights. We also sent a DVD of the movie. In 2023, King Louie made his return hidden in a large can that once held whole chiles.

I wish we had kept a full list. Next year the mailbox angst is on them. Ideas are stewing. Stew. That might be a good use for the chiles.

I’ve been lucky enough to meet a few elephants on assignment or on my own. They are marvelous animals and deserve to thrive in the wild. Performing Animal Welfare Society in San Andreas, Calif., is where I met Pat Derby, now deceased. She had a passion for rescuing elephants. The first to arrive at the sanctuary were 71 and Mara. They had been moved from a smaller preserve in Galt. Mara was born in Africa and was to become a circus elephant in Mexico after her mother was killed as part of a population cull. A rescue group saved her from that fate. Their first elephant, named 71, was underweight and had problems with her internal organs from the time she arrived in 1986 until her death in 2008, but lived 23 years in better health and relative freedom. Although their new dwellings had been photographed before, Pat told me I was the first photographer allowed into the elephant enclosure.

Other assignments took me to the Oakland Zoo to meet elephants M’Dunda, Donna, Lisa and their team of caretakers and handlers. The chance to touch the bottom of one of M’Dunda’s feet was a real treat. The zoo had just expanded their habitat to make it as natural as possible. I’d love to see elephants in the wild.

Months of staying home, avoiding others, going incognito with even the most stylish of masks, shopping online, and watching much less of the world go by outside the front door. That’s nothing.

Richard Zimmerman, best known Dugout Dick, had the hermit lifestyle figured out before we retreated into our cocoons. Shunning a picked a gorgeous site along the Salmon River and carved his home out of the mountainside. He created a series of dugouts, cabins and an orchard, and charged visitors to tour the property and stay awhile. He grew his own food and lived off the land before “off the grid” became the stuff of TV shows. He was a squatter until the Bureau of Land Management granted him a lifetime lease. One of his cabins has been preserved and was a fun discovery on a Sunday where-does-this-road-go drive.

Dugout Dick died in 2010. Watch this NBC news story to hear him sing as perhaps only he could, and learn more about the “Salmon River caveman.”

he way people communicated visually with each other before the advent of ink and paper has fascinated me. A roadside attraction along the Salmon River offers a geology lesson and pictographs found in the rock formation. An interpretive sign presented by the Salmon-Challis National Forest reads: The pictographs (drawings) on the rock wall … were made with crushed, iron-rich earth and a binder, such as animal fat. They may have recorded the sacred dreams of a shaman (religious leader), or may have been signs telling others about local resources, or have illustrated the tribe’s history.

Seeing these pictographs brought me back to a 2019 hike in Baja California near Loreto, Mexico. The Canipole cave paintings require a lot more effort to see. There are similarities in the colors used on the rocks. Bright orange paintings are found at both. It seems easier to interpret the Canipole illustrations as they more closely resemble birds and fish, while those in Idaho are less specific in my mind.

On a newspaper photo assignment years ago, I visited Vasco Regional Preserve near Livermore, California. Indigenous cave art there had been defaced. Access was only by guided tour. Similar vandalism has marred ancient pictographs and petroglyphs throughout North America. You can’t fix stupid. You also can’t fix what was created ages ago. That’s why I’m not specific about where these can be seen in person, even though they would be well-known to area locals.

I often see a graphic describing the many seasons of Idaho and other states that have a real winter. Fool’s spring? Second winter? Snow is giving way to brown grass with a hint of green trying to emerge. Tempting plants have started arriving at the local nurseries and hardware stores. Local gardeners who are much more serious than I about growing veggies and flowers are busy giving this year’s crops a head start in their hoop houses. No matter which winter stage we’re experiencing, even though it is officially spring, we can only complain that there wasn’t enough snow to make the sub-zero temperatures worth it. This area, along with much of the West, needs moisture. Spring’s promise is strong this week, but not strong enough to put a shovel in the ground. Maybe April will bring some showers.

National Weather Service folks and online authorities seem to disagree on what to call it: rime ice, hoarfrost, freezing fog or “pogonip,” from the Shoshone Native American tribe’s word for the white death. Maybe it’s a little of both kinds. In the interest of being accurate, I’m being vague. If you’ve ever been a newspaper editor, you soon learn that someone out there knows a lot more about some subject you’ve carefully researched than you do — and they aren’t shy about letting you know. Especially about birds, but I digress. The frost, whatever it is, returned this morning.

Everything covered in white crystals is really stunning. Grab your camera and explore your immediate surroundings while any related black ice clears from the roads.

Last fall we planted more than 100 bulbs in hopes of a colorful garden this year. We left behind hundreds of tulips, daffodils and other flowers when we moved from our first house. Now we’re on our fourth. On a whim, I added a few amaryllis to the most recent order. I don’t have a green thumb and haven’t had a great deal of luck growing anything indoors. There are months of waiting to see if the tiny bit of green sticking out from the top will become the beautiful flowers pictured in the catalog

Amaryllis bulbs required only a few weeks before the fun began. The first bulb, a Papillo with maroon and light green butterfly-like flowers, bloomed for just a few days before continuing on its life cycle. With blooms a bit larger than a salad plate, the second bulb, called Twinkle, is a more traditional red and white. It is no little star. It is sending up a second spike, but so far there are no leaves.

Maybe we’ll see them again next year if we treat the bulbs properly. Please check out the slideshow that starts with Twinkle and ends with Papilio.

I never expected that one might come looking for me. This morning I looked across the pasture to the trees that border the Lemhi River. What was that big critter? Too big for a cow. Not the right shape for a horse. Too tall for a bear. It turned its large head to stare back toward the house. Yup, a moose. They are not known to frequent this area southeast of Salmon. It stayed motionless for perhaps 20 minutes — enough time for me to grab my trusty ol’ Nikon already equipped with a 300mm lens and teleconverter. I remained at a respectful, nonthreatening distance from my side of the pasture’s fence. It moved on and perhaps will surprise a neighbor. Much obliged, moose.

Just as I was ready to give up, Wild Loreto Tours guide Mario said, “just 2 more miles.” Certainly I could do that. Just moments later, the shortest 2 miles of my life, my daughter-in-law and I were looking at petroglyphs etched into some large boulders. A few steps more and we faced a wall of colorful paintings. It wasn’t a cave, but may have been at one time.

Mario explained that the paintings were a way of communicating with people who might pass through the area, much like a newspaper or bulletin board would today. Most of the drawings creatures found in the region. From the drawings, it is interpreted that there were many more whales in the sea than found today. Other paintings are of turtles and birds. Some are geometric shapes and series of dots. Colors of the pre-Hispanic paintings are vibrant.

If you go: contact Wild Loreto Tours Mario, who said he is the only guide to have permission to travel through private land for access, is full of information about the history of the area, as well as its flora and fauna. Plus, he’s full of encouragement when you may feel like turning back. Be sure to have good nonslip walking shoes or boots that will support your feet on uneven, rocky surfaces.

The gymnasium was packed with students from throughout the county and members of the community who, like me, wanted to be part of this event. Children younger than 18 were given a quarter while everyone else could exchange $10 for a roll of the new coins.

Watch for these coins in your change. You can carry a two bits of “The Frank” with you.

That often meant woe to me, especially after she gave my precious Kodak Instamatic to Grandpa as we left Norway in 1969. And I should stop being grumpy about it because now he’d have a camera and could send us pictures. I could always get another camera. I eyed the Argus as that replacement. I wanted the Argus. I coveted the Argus. It looked cool. It had twisty knobs. It was kinda geeky. If I had a camera like this then I would not have to pose in front of it. It was not to be. A camera wouldn’t be forthcoming for quite awhile. Photography would become my life’s work. I have been through many cameras since 1969.

I confess to have snuck some photos from time to time. Back in the ’60s, developing film was expensive. A roll might sit in the camera for half the year. I had to be careful not to finish it off. I also had to remind Mom about that time she took that photo that she didn’t remember. Mine, but hers. She probably caught on. I stopped getting into trouble. About a decade ago, she gave me the rangefinder in its original box, complete with the flash attachment that connected to the side and a few packages of bulbs (never, ever snuck). All sit on my camera shelf of fame.

Mom passed away on August 11 and would have been 96 today, August 23. My brother and I posted a photo gallery on Facebook. Some of the photos were made with this camera. Thank you for your condolences, kind expressions, memories and the variety of emojis on the gallery. All are very much appreciated.

The Valley Humane Society was moving from its Spring Street location to larger and better quarters in Pleasanton, California. He was among the cats that needed homes before the big move. After a family conference, I went back to adopt Jasper. He was a garbage can kitty — literally thrown into the trash. Someone brought him to VHS, which raised him until he was old enough to adopt.

Separated from his mama at too young an age, Jasper did not learn what was food and what wasn’t. No shoelace, no fuzzy kitty toy, no brand-new-never-worn wool sock, no fluffy blanket or towel was safe from him. Woe to the person who ignored the warning to put shoes away in the closet. We were surprised when we did not find quilts in the litter box.

Despite his quirky diet (he eventually learned to prefer what was in his dish), we found him to be the friendliest cat to live with us. Any visitor became his instant friend. He never met a lap that didn’t inspire him to curl up and purr.

Jasper became ill, stopped eating and struggled to breathe. X-rays made at the vet’s office showed severe congestive heart failure and other major health problems. He would not get well. The horribly difficult decision to do what was best for him was made. There will never be another cat like him. The house feels different. Thank you, Jasper, for being a great companion.

The sight of a bull trout captured in a rotary screw fish trap was cause for excitement as Jared Barker emptied the trap box. It was the largest he said he had seen. Bull trout, chinook salmon, steelhead and cutthroat trout are the “target” fish in a study of juvenile fish migrating from the Lemhi River.

Moments later, Barker and partner Mike Hall, both lead technicians for Quantitative Consultants, checked to see if the fish had been previously tagged. If so, it had been caught before and would be in a database of individual fish. Or, it had swallowed a fish that had been tagged.

“It’s like catching fish in a barrel,” Hall joked.

Biologists and technicians identify, tag, weigh and measure the target fish and then release them upstream to be captured again in the large rotary trap, or downstream if already tagged. That helps estimate the number of out-migrating fish. Biologists and technicians identify, tag, weigh and measure the target fish and then release them upstream to be captured again in the large rotary trap, or downstream if already tagged. That helps estimate the number of out-migrating fish.

Native fish that live in the river year-round also are counted, measured and weighed before being set free downstream. Even sculpin, the bottom of the food chain, are important. Once let go, the bull trout stayed near the trap — perhaps in hopes of an easy meal or two.

Quantitative Consultants is under contract from the Bonneville Power Administration to monitor the population of migrating Chinook salmon and steelhead trout to “offset” the number of these fish that die in BPA’s hydropower systems. The project also is in cooperation with the Idaho Department of Fish and Game.

While most are passing through, those that are repeat visitors can become familiar faces (or fins) and have been given nicknames. Each tagged fish with Passive Integrated Transponder tag that passes over an antenna throughout the watershed is monitored. fish logged can be tracked at Columbia Basin PIT Tag Information System (PTAGIS) , a public database.

The Norwegians say that there is no bad weather, only bad clothing. Having grown up in Minnesota, I am very familiar with being prepared for the change in seasons. We’d take one weekend and swap out our summer wardrobes for clothing more suitable for fall and winter. Then we’d sweat through that final heat wave with shorts and T-shirts out of easy reach until springtime. Warmer weather is forecast.

“Paint Your Wagon” is one of our favorite movies. I can hardly wait until the gold prospectors, all hunkered down in the storm, start singing with beautiful harmonies:
The rain is Tess,
The fire’s Joe
And they call the wind Maria

What do we call the smoke? It’s left out of the brilliant song by Alan J. Lerner and Frederick Loewe. We can’t call it Karl, which is reserved for San Francisco’s famous fog. Hurricanes and tropical storms get their own names. More than half of the country is affected by thick smoke from western fires that are burning hundreds of thousands of acres. And we’re the lucky ones. We’re didn’t have to evacuate our homes as the flames raced through the forested mountains of Montana, Idaho, Oregon, British Columbia and the rest of the West. We just have to deal with smoky air and fine ash covering everything, as if the forests are redistributing themselves.

If you have any influence, please send Tess. Lots and lots of Tess.

Some neighbors came over for dinner last week. It was the first time to meet one of them. Besides the items they said they would contribute to dinner came a bouquet of gladiolus (more on them another day), raspberry preserves, apricot preserves and zucchini fresh from the garden. What a nice welcome to the neighborhood.

We were told that there are a two times a year here when you lock your doors and roll up the car windows: zucchini season and rhubarb season. However, we were more than happy to accept the abundant produce and now know a sneaky way to get rid of excess rhubarb next spring. One of the zucchini, however, was about half the size of a Volkswagen Beetle. I was about to hollow it out and slap some wheels on it when a better idea emerged: check recipes on Pinterest.

This one from the Dash of Sanity blog used the most zucchini. I added some nutmeg. The yield was two loaves today and two yesterday, plus some leftover grated squash for tonight’s dinner.

More zucchini is lurking in the kitchen. Check your doors and windows

This tiny bird came to rest on the back deck. It appeared a bit stunned but not with an obvious injury. Maybe it had just left the nest and was making plans for its next adventure. No matter how it came to rest just outside the sliding glass door, I knew that golden retriever Freyja would love to give it a ride in her mouth — especially on the way to her stomach. It didn’t chirp or flutter as I scooped it up and placed it out of harm’s way, but fortunately within range of my camera’s long lens. I am happy to report that it took wing shortly after its modeling session.

Members of the Idaho Birding group on Facebook didn’t agree at first on what kind of bird it is, but orange-crowned warbler(Oreothlypis celata) got most of the votes. I appreciate that they so readily shared their knowledge and pointed me to some identification tools to use in the future. There are some really fantastic bird photographers in these parts. In my old caption-writing days, given the chance of being incorrect and having to answer phone calls or be the subject of letters to the editor, I would just call it a young bird. What I do know for sure is it didn’t become Freyja’s midday snack.

One day last year I realized that I was receiving catalogs faster than I could recycle them. Cabela’s, Coldwater Creek, Eddie Bauer, LL Bean, Land’s End and others seemed to know when their catalogs were no longer on the mail pile at home.
I decided to keep every catalog received from the first one with a Christmas cover in 2010 to the first received this year, in late September. Thank you, Frontgate, for saved me from accumulating any more. I still can’t afford the artificial Christmas tree that would look perfect in my living room. How I got on other lists, I’ll probably never know.
I’ll admit to being a catalog shopper for much of my clothing. Most stores don’t carry pants with long enough inseams or blouses with long enough sleeves. They also have been a convenient way to send gifts to people out of state. However, I’m too short for many items in Long Tall Sally.
Who is Norm Thomson? Does anyone wear what is found in Woman Within? There’s also Winter Silks, Fossil and Soft Surroundings. Garnet Hill and other clothiers competing for dollars.
Red Envelope, Fresh Finds, Brookstone, Sharper Image, Fresh Finds, Expressions, Acorn, Signals, Duluth Trading Co., Wind & Weather and the Vermont Country Store, Herrington, Potpourri and What on Earth have gift items so unique and clever that I don’t know how I could have resisted them.
Which catalog has the most calories, I wonder: Harry & David, Wolferman’s, Cheryl’s cookies and brownies, Mrs. Prindable’s, Hickory Farms, Uncommon Goods, Mrs. Beasley’s, Fairytale Brownies, and one devoted to everything pecan.
After looking at those delights, Athleta reminds me to sprint over to their place in San Francisco, and there’s always Spanx if I ignore Athleta’s invitation.
Now that I have a grandson, it may be time to pay attention to HearthSong,Young Explorers, Constructive Playthings and Fat Brain Toys.
There are catalogs to support social causes: National Wildlife, World Vision and Heifer International.
In the what-were-they-thinking category are SherrillTree (tree gear for tree people), Consolidated Plastics and ULINE shipping and industrial supplies. And then there’s the catalog for outfitting my Corvette — but I don’t have one.
I could have saved a lot of time by just keeping Collections Etc., Catalog Favorites and Catalog Classics, which edit down popular items into one handy magazine.
The 61-1/2 inch stack of catalogs has fallen over twice as I attempted to measure the height, scaring the cats into hiding.
Now it’s time to recycle the stack and try to get off their mailing lists. Maybe a donation to the Arbor Day Foundation would be in order, too.

Making photographs of the prairie flowers that I learned were planted there a few years ago brought me comfort. Just before heading back, as light was disappearing, I saw a brilliant yellow swallowtail butterfly among some purple flowers that I could not identify. The butterfly seemed to me a good omen that my dog would be all right. It took awhile to ID the flowers. Google searches weren’t showing me what I needed. I finally called the Dakota County parks department and was transferred to Johnny Forrest (great name) of the natural resources department. I expected to hear that they were too busy, or some other excuse that would have been completely understandable given government budgets these days. Instead, I was greeted with an invitation to send the photo. He got back to me quickly with more information than I expected. That’s something called “Minnesota nice.” He talked about the butterflies and other insects the flowers there attract, and let me know the food the seed-heads provide food for winter songbirds because the stems stand up to snow. More prairie flowers are scheduled to be planted there next spring. It will take awhile for the new planting to get established — 2013 for some and 2014 for the rest. If you’re in the area and have some time available, stop by the park for a visit.

The idea was that he and his friends would match his shots with a shot from their alcoholic beverage of choice. They quickly realized that they wouldn’t survive. Then the long-awaited credits. Yes, his name was there among the associate producers — misspelled. He took it in stride. It was corrected for the second.
